A few years ago my Mom and I spent a few days in the Hamptons. We drove out on Monday and left on Thursday evening, to avoid the horrendous traffic. We visited a different town (or two) each day, took a ferry to Shelter Island, ate seafood in Montauk. This year we did the same thing in Cape Cod.
I think I was in junior high the last (and only) time I visited Cape Cod. All I remember is stopping by big sand dunes by the road. This time, we visited lots of towns (taking the back roads(6A) whenever possible), found fun places for lunch, shopped, ate lobster rolls, went out of our way for an afternoon treat at the ice cream smuggler (yes it was worth it), spent some time at the JFK museum and tested lots of ‘award winning’ chowder. Best of all, I got to enjoy time with my Mom.
It was a great primer trip. I’m already imagining my one. Next time I’d like to go for at least a full week and rent out a cute cottage with weathered cedar shingles, in walking distance of a beach. Maybe spend a day visiting Nantucket and/or Martha’s Vineyard. and definitely carve out time at the Cape Cod National Seashore, taking photos.
